Let’s not give up on our goals
Because our programs are constantly revised to meet the current standards of our public school’s curriculum, Kumon instructors participate in many study group programs to keep up with the changes. The programs are designed to help instructors develop the skills needed to assist students. Currently, Mr. and Mrs. Nishio are working on the Level N of math program with the group. They are working with one of the professors who design Kumon’s math program. Mr. and Mrs. Nisho have been passing their tests with excellent marks and are expected to complete the last level in next year. That is one of the goals they have set to accomplish for themselves.
We believe that it is very important for every student to set goals and make consistent effort to attain the goals. It is difficult for any student to achieve goals unless he/she makes constructive plans to attain them. Attaining the high level of math or reading program requires hard work. That’s the reason we encourage our assistants to study and complete the level J and above in either math or reading program to become good examples to our students. Because many of our students have asked us about working as graders at our centers, it is very important for our graders to have the knowledge and experience of the program that we implement at our centers. Over the years many students volunteered to work as graders, and many of them told us that they wanted to work at our centers in the future. We welcome anyone to work at our centers; however, there are specific requirements for the job. Students are qualified to work as graders as long as they are older than 15 and have completed Level J or above in either subjects. We hope our centers will be filled with many assistants who completed the last level of our programs.
At the beginning of this year, we have visited one of the fastest growing Kumon centers in Los Angeles. At the center, we observed one high school age grader, who completed the math program, working with the students who are studying the level higher than J. At the center, all the students were studying diligently and independently. The students were very enthusiastic about their work and had set high goals for themselves. It was an impressive experience we had at the center. In the near future, we hope our students will set one of the highest standards in this country by achieving their long term goals. Until then, we have so much work cut out for us. Students, set your specific goals and work towards the goals every day. Determine the date you will complete the level that you are currently working on. Develop your self-learning skills and challenge yourself to the limit. Constantly remind yourself what is your level’s standard completion time and try to beat it Do not forget to put your name, date, and time on the first page of your worksheet every time. No matter how far your goals may seem at this moment, you will be able to achieve them as long as you do not give up on them.
A personal letter from Mr. Nisho
I have been participating one of the study group programs for many years because I want to lead and help our students as much as I can. Even though I am still suffering from chronic leukemia, I have never succumbed to the disease. Currently, I am completing at least 2 to 3 pages of worksheet (level J) every day. I need to rest when my red blood cell count increases more than 20000, but I have determined to do as much as I can. As long as I work as a Kumon instructor, I intend to keep what I am doing because I want our students to achieve their full academic potential.
I am happy to announce that approximately 70 Kumon instructors from all over the United States will be visiting our center this summer. I hope that we can show these instructors what we are capable of achieving. I truly want our students to become genuine independent learners.
I also welcome parents to do Kumon. As long as their child is enrolled in Kumon, parents can take any Kumon’s program for 50% off of the monthly tuition.

Sincerely yours,
Seiichiro Nishio
